Kidz
Movies
"Figli" (Kidz) is a film by Mattia Torre.
This premise seems necessary for me to recount my approach to directing the film after Mattia's premature passing.
I say "a film by" and not simply "a film written by" because I knew Mattia well and I knew how much personal experience was in this script. The film is a distillation, first and foremost, of his life, but, in my opinion, it transcends this private sphere to become a mirror of all our lives.
Existence turned upside down by the arrival of a child, the anxiety of raising them, the feeling of not being able to cope, the difficulty in accepting the small and enormous changes that life presents to Sara and Nicola (the couple played by Paola Cortellesi and Valerio Mastandrea) – all of this is constantly examined through the ironic magnifying glass of comedy and was already contained in a nutshell in the monologue "I figli invecchiano" (Children make you old) from which the film draws inspiration.
"Kidz” is the comical and moving story of a couple, of two people who love each other and try to withstand the shockwave of parenthood in a chaotic time and an increasingly hostile country.
In this film, the comedic register and deep analysis merge; reality, the perception of reality, and the subconscious are intertwined, sometimes even in the same situation, with a nonchalance and apparent lightness that only great authors possess.
