Synopsis

When teenage Priscilla Beaulieu meets Elvis Presley at a party, the man who is already a meteoric rock-and-roll superstar becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a thrilling crush, an ally in loneliness, a vulnerable best friend. Through Priscilla’s eyes, Sofia Coppola tells the unseen side of a great American myth in Elvis and Priscilla’s long courtship and turbulent marriage, from a German army base to his dream-world estate at Graceland, in this deeply felt and ravishingly detailed portrait of love, fantasy, and fame.

Director's notes
  • I was struck by Priscilla Presley's autobiography, about the years she lived as a young woman at Graceland. I tried to grasp what she felt as she immersed herself in Elvis's world, only to eventually re-emerge and discover her own identity. As an artist, it's important for me to show the world through the eyes of my characters, without judging. I have always been interested in concepts concerning identity, lived experience, and the transformation of individuals. This film explores how Priscilla became who she is, and what it means and has meant to be a woman for her and for subsequent generations. She experienced situations common to many young women, with the difference that she faced them in an unusual context. And that's why, in Priscilla's story, despite being unique, we can all incredibly identify with it.
