Synopsis

In 1950s Mexico City, WILLIAM LEE, an American ex-pat in his late forties, leads a solitary life amidst a small American community. However, the arrival in town of EUGENE ALLERTON, a young student, stirs William into finally establishing a meaningful connection with someone.

Director's notes
  • “How can a man who sees and feels be other than sad?” He asks himself this in his private journal, the last time he writes in it before he dies.

In adapting his second novel, published almost forty years after he wrote it, we have tried to respond to that modest plea from the great iconoclast of the Beat Generation.

Lee loves Allerton, Allerton loves Lee; will they be able to truly meet, in spite of all the missteps and fears that weigh on them during their picaresque journey through a South America projected from Burroughs’ mind?
