Synopsis

Goliarda ends up in prison because of a reckless and unexpected act, but at Rebibbia her encounter with several young inmates becomes an experience of rebirth. Once they are released, during a scorching Roman summer, the women continue to see one another. In this time that feels suspended, Goliarda forms a deep and life-changing bond—an authentic, overwhelming connection that no one on the outside will be able to understand. This film tells the story of a moment in the life of Goliarda Sapienza, a story of friendship, love, and freedom.

Director's notes

  • The summer of two friends who met in prison and their happily drifting away, this is the subject of "Fuori," far from being a biopic about Goliarda Sapienza. It is taken from two of her books in which she mixes truth and imagination, and I did the same. I filmed in her real home, in Rome's Rebibbia prison with the inmates, I evoked Rome in 1980 without reconstructions, digging with the camera into the city of today. "Fuori" allowed me to move without constraints, to work on long sequences that didn't necessarily have to lead to something concluded. To let myself drift too, carried by the wind of Goliarda Sapienza and the women protagonists of this film, Ippolita di Majo who wrote it with me, Valeria Golino, Matilda De Angelis, Elodie.
